Employee to Donate Portion of Liver to Alum

John Carlson and Liz Turner
John Carlson is traveling to Cleveland this weekend to donate part of his liver to alum Elizabeth Ewell Turner ’09 who worked with Carlson in the Mailroom for three years.

John Carlson of our Mail Services Department is traveling to Cleveland this weekend to prepare for his living liver donation surgery scheduled for Monday, May 17. The liver transplant recipient is Elizabeth Ewell Turner ’09, an alum who worked with John in the Mailroom for three years and also worked in the Department of Psychology on campus.

A living liver donation surgery involves removing part of a person’s healthy liver — as much as 60 percent — and using this partial liver to replace the recipient’s diseased liver. In the weeks following surgery, both the donor and recipient sections will grow to the size of normal livers.

Cards and letters of support may be sent to John Carlson in care of the Mailroom in the Allen Building, and donations toward John’s expenses made be made via the associated donation link.
