Professor of Mathematics Presents at Annual Conference in France

Dr. Rebecca Smith (first row)

Dr. Rebecca Smith (Professor of Mathematics) gave a talk on pattern avoidance in alternating sign matrices at the annual International Conference on Permutation Patterns which took place at the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France.

The annual International Conference on Permutation Patterns took place July 3-7, 2023, at the University of Burgundy located in Dijon, France.

Dr. Rebecca Smith, Professor of Mathematics, gave a talk on pattern avoidance in alternating sign matrices, which is ongoing joint work with Mathilde Bouvel (University of Lorraine/LORIA) and Jessica Striker (North Dakota State University) . Dr. Smith’s joint work considers the notion of pattern avoidance with respect to the key of the alternating sign matrix defined by Lascoux and further studied by Aval. It then refines the case of such pattern avoidance studied by Ayyer, Cori, and Gouyou-Beauchamps to similarly characterize the alternating sign matrices avoiding a pair of patterns. The class of alternating sign matrices whose key avoids these patterns is shown to be enumerated by the Catalan numbers.

Dr. Smith was also on the program committee for the conference.

A bit of final trivia: Dijon is where Gustave Eiffel was born.
