Journalism Major Chosen for Newsroom & Innovation Lab

Abigail Scott is one of 20 students nationwide selected to be a member of the Online News Association (ONA) Student Newsroom and Innovation Lab. She will attend the annual ONA conference in Philadelphia, where she will produce content and tools for the event under the mentorship of journalism and social media professionals from NPR, The (Toronto) Globe and Mail, Chalkbeat, and others.

Scott is a sophomore Journalism and Broadcasting Major with a concentration in Multimedia Journalism. A Finger Lakes Region native, Scott is President of the University’s student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and a staff writer for The Stylus. In Fall 2023, Scott will be doing an independent study in which she reports on the Brockport Central School District Board of Education for CanalsideChronicles.com in an effort to provide news to the community because Brockport is a news desert in which professional journalists no longer regularly cover school board meetings.

ONA is the largest professional organization for digital journalists. Students chosen for the newsroom and lab came from colleges and universities including but not limited to University of California – Berkeley, American University, University of Missouri – Columbia, University of Massachusetts – Amherst, and New York University. Scott is the only SUNY student selected.
