Happy 75th Birthday to SUNY

SUNY officially turned 75 on April 4, 2023. Watch a two-minute overview of the drama surrounding its founding from Bruce Leslie (History Professor Emeritus).

On April 4, 1948 Gov. Thomas Dewey signed legislation not only creating SUNY, but placing it outside the control of the Regents, who opposed the creation of a state system on behalf of the private colleges. Despite the support of Gov. Dewey, the legislation barely passed and was filled with poison pills that bedevilled SUNY for decades. But the country’s largest comprehensive system of higher education had been launched with Brockport as one of the founding members.
