How can Book Bans be Defeated?

Dr. Cody Miller, assistant professor of English education, lead a professional development session for Monroe County librarians as part of an event entitled, “Shake Up Your Shelves with Authentic Voices.” Dr. Miller’s session was entitled, “The Shelf as Civic Space: Supporting LGBTQ Stories in a Time of Book Bans.” The session outlined the current attack on LGBTQ books in public schools and libraries, and provided examples of how communities are fighting back against book bans.
The session also included speeches by authors Linda Sue Park, Emma Otheguy, Breanna J. McDaniel, and Perry Ground as well as SUNY Geneseo education librarian Becky Leathersich. The professional learning event was sponsored by the Five Systems SLS and held at the Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County.
