“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” Cites Research by Criminal Justice Professor

An article by Dr. Andrew Baranauskas of the Department of Criminal Justice was mentioned by comedian John Oliver during a recent episode on Crime Reporting.
A recent episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” discusses the reporting of crime by the news media. In this discussion, host John Oliver cites a study published by Dr. Andrew Baranauskas, assistant professor of criminal justice at SUNY Brockport. This study examines the influence of the media on public perceptions of crime and public support for crime policy. It finds that people who view local TV news are more likely to believe that crime is rising and more likely to support tough crime policies.
Dr. Baranauskas completed this research while he was a graduate student at Northeastern University with his graduate mentor, Dr. Kevin Drakulich. For more on this study: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/1745-9125.12189.
