Environmental Science & Ecology Professor Received a New Research Grant

Dr. Jacques Rinchard received a two-year research grant for $330,465 from the University of California at Davis to conduct a statewide egg thiamine surveillance in the California hatcheries and fisheries.

Thiamine deficiency was first linked with high mortality of juvenile Chinook salmon in California’s Central Valley (CCV) hatcheries in 2020.  Dr. Rinchard’s egg thiamine surveillance effort found widespread thiamine deficiency in CCV Chinook salmon in 2020 and 2021 and emerging thiamine deficiency complex in Klamath and Trinity River Coho salmon in 2021.  Therefore, this new grant will allow Dr. Rinchard’s lab to continue to monitor egg thiamine in salmonine species in California hatcheries and fisheries in 2022 and 2023.  The grant also includes the purchase of a new high liquid performance chromatography system and will support several students from Dr. Rinchard’s lab.

The grant will be administered by The Research Foundation for SUNY at SUNY Brockport.
