Maternal Mortality Rates in the United States

Dr. Elizabeth Heavey, Department of Nursing, published an article that discussed maternal mortality rates in the United States.

The maternal mortality rate in the United States is the highest rate among developed nations, twice as high as Canada and Britain. In addition, the United States is the only developed country with a consistently rising mortality rate. This rate reflects deep racial and economic disparities. Even after controlling for education and economics, the pregnancy mortality rate is five times higher for black women then white women. Steps to address this issue are included.
