Women & Gender Studies Professor Serves as Invited Faculty

The V-NY-St. Global Institute of Linguistics, Cognition, and Culture (NYI) is an advanced study program with a focus on linguistics, cognitive, and critical cultural studies. Associate Professor of Women and Gender Studies Dr. Barb LeSavoy’s seminar was titled “Sex in Public: Feminist Resistance and a Politic of Belonging.”

Dr. LeSavoy’s Sex in Public seminar used media and visual culture to examine sex and gender identity politics and feminist resistance movements performed across geographies of time and place. Reading selections and discussion topics considered AIDS/HIV Activisms, Trans and Queer Equality Movements, Holocaust Remembrance, and Technologies of Human Rights. Seminar participants had opportunity interrogate ways identity shapes feminist activism and ways feminist activism shapes a politic of belonging. This is Dr. LeSavoy’s eighth time serving as invited NYI faculty.  

NYI, prior to the pandemic  and now war, was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. This sumer V-NYI 5  was held June 30- July 15, 2022 in the NYI virtual sky Participants took seminars with international scholars in a range of fields, especially those that do not fall neatly into traditional discipline areas. Since 2003, over 1200 participants from 58 countries and over 60 Russian Federation cities have received certificates for completing the NYI Programs.
