The Brockport Debate Society (BDS) invites you to participate in a digital speech competition taking place over the course of the Spring 2021 semester. The goal of the event is to showcase the public speaking, research, and advocacy skills of Brockport students as they identify significant issues facing our society as well as offer relevant solutions to address them. The BDS Digital Speech Competition asks students to prepare, present, and record a four-minute persuasive speech over an issue of community, regional, national, or international concern.
All students will participate in a preliminary round in which competitors will submit their recorded speeches. The videos will be evenly distributed to a set of judges (Brockport faculty members) and scored on argument quality, persuasion advocacy, and public speaking.
Following the preliminary round, the top 10 speakers will be announced and invited to participate in a final round. The final round will have all eligible speakers prepare, present, and record a four-minute persuasive speech answering the same question: What do you see as the most important issue facing society in the next 10 years? The final speeches will be evenly distributed to a set of judges and scores based on the same rubric from the preliminary round. The finalists will be award trophies, with the top three ranked finalists awarded gift cards of $150, $75, and $50.
