Journalism Major Focuses on Empowering Young Women at Internship

Lauren Wixom at the finish line.

Journalism major Lauren Wixom engages in her passion to teach young girls the skills they need to lead a healthy mental and physical lifestyle at her internship with Girls on the RUN.

Girls on the Run is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthy habits and building confidence in young girls through “physical activity and dynamic discussions to build social, emotional and physical skills in every girl.”

As a volunteer assistant coach for Girls on the RUN (GOTR) of Greater Rochester, Wixom has helped mentor dozens of Rochester area girls in third through fifth grade in life skills and helped them train for a 5K run.

Wixom turned her volunteer coaching/mentoring role into a full-fledged Social Media Marketing and Communications internship in the fall of 2021. She worked alongside the executive director of marketing and publicity for GOTR events and campaigns and helped manage the organization’s social media, networking, and communication platforms.

“This internship helped me grow as a person and develop crucial marketing and communications skills that will benefit me in the future. I am very grateful to have been an intern at this organization and for all the skills and knowledge I gained from my experiences at GOTR,” said Wixom.
