Expanded Mental Health Options & Resources

At SUNY Brockport, we have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure that we can continue to meet the needs of all our students in empathic, streamlined, and efficient ways. Learn more about the resources available to our community.

Greetings Brockport Community,

As many of you know, the COVID-19 pandemic has created untold changes in people’s lives, both on campus and within our communities. This is particularly the case for the mental health and well-being of our students.

At SUNY Brockport, we have been working diligently behind the scenes to ensure that we can continue to meet the needs of our students in empathic, streamlined, and efficient ways. In order to best serve the increased number of students requiring complex care and those who might need more general support, we would like to make you aware of a variety of resources available to all of our students – undergraduate and graduate students alike.

As part of SUNY’s ongoing commitment to enhance and support student mental health and wellness, the following are campus and supplemental opportunities for students to seek care and connection.

  • SUNY Brockport Counseling Center:
    • Given the popularity of the self-schedule option, there is currently a wait time to see a counselor in the Counseling Center. However, students are still able to schedule triage visits at the Counseling Center via the My Hazen online scheduling portal.  This is a particularly useful option for students whose needs can be addressed in a single session.  Our open access hours will continue to be Monday through Friday from 8 - 11 am on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • Group Counseling Sessions: To join a group, students can call Hazen at 585-395-2414 to schedule a triage or complete the hyperlinked forms below:
      • Grief and Loss Support Group (Thursdays 1 - 2:30 pm): Those grieving the loss of a loved one can connect with others experiencing loss, feel less isolated in their grief, receive support, and strengthen their ability to cope.
      • Brockport Addiction and Recovery Support Group (Fridays 3:30 - 4:30 pm): a supportive and inclusive environment for Brockport Students looking to change their patterns of substance use and build a connection with others seeking to make lifestyle changes related to substance use.
      • Coping Skills Workshop (Tuesdays 1 - 2:30 pm or Fridays 3:30 - 5 pm): An interactive, skills-based workshop designed to build self-understanding, support for coping with college stressors, developing and building skills for mood management, and identifying and creating purposeful actions in life.
      • Process Group (Fridays 3:30 - 5 pm): This weekly support group offers students an opportunity to connect with others for the common purpose of finding out more about who they are, and what they would like to change in their personal lives as well as in their relationships with others.
  • The University at Albany Peer Assistance Hotline (518-442-5777)
    • The Hotline is open from 1 pm-midnight, M-TH, and 24 hours a day Fri-Sun when the UAlbany is in session
  • The University at Albany Middle Earth Café – a Virtual Hotline
    • The café is a service of the Middle Earth Peer Assistance Program that is an alternative to the Peer Assistance Hotline and provides information about mental health and behavioral issues that affect college students. Similarly, the Virtual Hotline is open from 1 pm - midnight, M-TH, and 1 pm Friday until Sunday at midnight when UAlbany classes are in session.  Please allow for up to 48 hours for a response to a submission.
  • Thriving Campus
    • SUNY Brockport partners with a number of community-based mental health providers. This resource is hosted directly on the Counseling Center website and provides a list of local clinicians with whom students can make appointments, particularly those seeking a long-term clinical relationship.
  • The SUNY Student Telecounseling Network (STCN) Coming Soon!
    • This program assists students in accessing a psychiatrist, psychologist, or nurse practitioner at Upstate who can help with diagnostic assessment and provide treatment recommendations, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and medication management.
    • The STCN will closely collaborate with the Hazen Health and Counseling Center for ongoing treatment to help reduce barriers for continuous care.
  • Crisis Resources: At all times, SUNY Brockport remains committed to providing additional options for students experiencing immediate crises.  This includes the following resources:
    • The Hazen Counseling Center (Mon.-Fri. 8am-4:30pm)
    • The National Suicide Prevention Hotline (800-273-TALK/8255)
    • The SUNY Crisis Text Line (text GOT5U to 741-741)
    • Veterans Crisis Line (Call 800-273-Talk/8255 and Press 1 or text 838255)
    • The Trevor Project for students who identify as LGBTQIA (Call 866-488-7386 or text 678-678)
    • The Steve Fund for students of color (Text STEVE to 741-741)

As we continue to respond to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we also want to be cognizant that students experiencing basic needs issues can be supported through the following resources as well:

  1. BPT Basic Needs provides a number of resources for basic needs.
  2. The Golden Eagle Opportunity Fund provides temporary financial assistance for immediate and current emergency situations, which could involve circumstances beyond a student’s control.
  3. The EagleCares Center application is designed to help students find resources on campus for a variety of concerns.
  4. Foodlink is designed to leverage the power of food to end hunger and build healthy communities.
  5. The Center for Youth has a variety of short-term housing and emergency services for students who are experiencing hardship.

The mental health and wellbeing of our students remains a campus-wide priority. We hope that all members of the Golden Eagle community feel empowered to become advocates of their own mental health and use the resources above to find the support they need.

Finally, please keep an eye out for expanded faculty and staff mental health training and additional mental health programming coming soon.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions: (585) 395-2414.
