BASC Dining Services Earns Top National Award
The National Association of College and University Food Services announced SUNY Brockport as the recipient of the gold prize in the prestigious Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards.
The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) announced SUNY Brockport as a recipient of a NACUFS 2020 Loyal E. Horton Dining Award. SUNY Brockport received a Gold Award in the category of Retail Sales – Single Concept/Multiple Concepts/Marketplace for medium schools. Named for a NACUFS founder, past president, and highly regarded innovator, the prestigious dining awards celebrate exemplary menus, presentations, special event planning, and new dining concepts, and provide an avenue for sharing ideas and creative presentations in campus dining services.
Fifty-eight colleges and universities across North America submitted entries in six categories, including Residential Dining Concepts, Residential Dining Facility, Residential Dining—Special Event, Retail Sales—Single Concept/Multiple Concepts/Marketplace, Catering—Special Event, and Catering—Online Menu. A team of six judges and a committee chair examined each entry carefully and selected top candidates in each category.
BASC Dining Services entered TRAX in the contest and focused on how the recent 2019 renovation enabled Dining Services to
- Modernize the space
- Improve speed of service
- Offer customizable menus to excite today’s students and
- Increase customer satisfaction.
The renovation included large community tables that can accommodate clubs and group meetings, a new hot bar with ready-to-go foods, and fast-fire pizza ovens that enable customized menu items in less than two minutes. Students love the refreshed space and overall dining concept as evidenced by strong sales and increased scores on the NACUFS Customer Satisfaction Survey.
Dining Service Director Cathy Legacy had this to say about the award: “BASC recognizes that our students value a fully customizable, pay one price meal as an important dining option on campus. Our “made-by-you” menu allows students to choose their ingredients to create their personalized pizza, quesadilla, and TRAX Taterz, and our hot bar menu allows students to get a customized meal with the speed of a grab ‘n go item.”
Competing for one of these prestigious awards not only helps position the dining program as award-winning, but it also builds a sense of pride and team spirit within a dining staff. Sharing creativity and knowledge with other foodservice professionals is a key component of NACUFS membership.
