Mom’s Yeast Rolls

  • 2 cups of milk (scalded)
  • 2 packages of active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup of lukewarm water
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 6 Tbs. Crisco shortening
  • 2 Tsp. salt
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 2 eggs


Scald 2 cups of milk, soften 2 pkgs of active dry yeast in 1/2 cup of water (110 -115 degrees). If using compressed yeast, soften 2 cakes in 1/2 cup lukewarm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, Meanwhile, put into large bowl 1/2 cup of sugar, 6 tablespoons of shortening, 2 teaspoons of salt. Immediately pour scalded milk over ingredients in bowl and stir until shortening is melted. When lukewarm, blend in & beat till smooth 1 cup of sifted flour. Stir soften yeast and add, mixing well. Measure 5 cups of sifted . Add about 1/2 of flour to yeast mixture, beat until very smooth. Beat in 2 eggs well beaten. Beat in enough remaining flour to make soft dough. Turn dough onto floured surface. Let stand 5-10 minutes. Knead form into large ball and place in greased deep bowl. Turn dough to bring greased surface to the top. Cover with wax paper & towel. Let stand in a warm place until doubled. Punch down and pull edges to the center, turn completely over in the bowl. Cover and let rise again until doubled. Punch down on lightly floured surface. Place on greased baking sheet let rise 15 - 25 minutes. Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes.


At our family household, these golden delicious yeast rolls made by my mother were a family favorite for Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays, only.

Try them with lots of melted butter and watch them melt in your mouth!
